What Is Table Tennis?

Some call it ping pong, others stick to table tennis. Either way, this high-speed indoor sport has captured hearts from school halls to Olympic arenas. Played by two or four players using paddles (officially called table tennis rackets or bats), the game centers around a lightweight table tennis ball bouncing across a 9-foot table.

Simple, right? Not quite. Behind the rapid rallies lie strict rules, specific court dimensions, unique rackets, and legendary champions who have elevated this sport to an art form.

Lets Talk Rules: The Soul of the Game

Table tennis might seem casual, but its rules are anything but.

• Scoring: Games are played up to 11 points, with a 2-point margin needed to win.
• Sets: Matches typically consist of best of 5 or 7 sets.
• Serving: The ball must rest on the palm, tossed at least 16 cm in the air, and hit behind the baseline.
• Doubles Rules: In doubles, players must alternate hits, adding another layer of coordination.

And yes, no sneaky serves allowed.

Every point begins with a serve, but It's the rallies "the lightning exchanges and sudden spins" that steal the show. Watching a professional match? It's like witnessing poetry, but with paddles.
